Introduction

If you are still refreshing Google’s "People Also Ask" (PAA) section or checking keyword search volumes to build your content strategy, we need to talk.

You are looking at historical data. By the time a question shows up in PAA, it’s already old news.

As someone with a strategic background who hates lagging metrics, I recently hit a wall with traditional SEO while evaluating new digital strategies. Everyone is talking about GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), but most articles online just repeat the same tired advice: “Use Schema markup and write good content.”

So, I decided to do what any strategist would do: I stopped reading the theory and started testing it directly with AI. Here is what I discovered about why traditional SEO is failing, and how we are shifting toward a conversational GEO framework.

1. The Realization: PAA is Just Lagging History

Traditional SEO tools measure what already happened last month or last year. They tell you what keywords people typed into a search bar.

But search behavior has fundamentally changed. Users are no longer typing fragmented keywords like "best skincare treatment Hong Kong." They are having full, dynamic conversations with ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. They are asking nuanced, multi-layered questions.

If your content strategy is built entirely on historical search queries, you are optimizing for yesterday’s search engine, not today’s generative engines.

2. Our First AI Test: Simulating Real User Intent

Instead of relying on a keyword planner, I wanted to see how generative engines actually process queries. I ran a test by opening a chat with an AI and simulating a real consumer's journey.

Instead of treating the AI like a search bar, I treated it like a dialogue. I noticed something fascinating: the real gold isn't the first question—it’s the follow-up chain.

When a user asks an initial question, what do they ask next?

What are the hidden doubts, comparisons, and risk factors they throw at the AI in the second or third prompt?

Those follow-up questions are the real intent mapping. And guess what? Traditional SEO tools completely miss them.

3. The Pivot: Shifting from Keywords to Conversational AI Workflows

This realization changed how we look at content creation entirely. Moving forward, our GEO workflow isn’t about stuffing keywords or chasing PAA boxes. It's about a 3-step loop:

Reverse Prompting:

Forcing AI to simulate skeptical users and spit out a raw list of follow-up questions.

Structured Authoring:

Transforming those raw questions into clean, bottom-line-up-front (BLUF) formats that AI crawlers love to extract.

Cross-Platform Consensus:

Realizing that a website alone isn't enough—you need a web-wide footprint (like active discussions on Threads) to prove your brand's "Entity Reputation" to the AI.

What’s Next?

This is just the first step of our GEO experiment. A low-visibility website can't beat massive authority sites on traditional SEO, but we can outsmart them by aligning directly with how AI thinks and cites.

In our next post, I’ll share the exact "Reverse Prompting" workflow we used to extract those hidden follow-up questions from AI and turn them into a high-impact content list.
